Description

A comforting Shepherd’s Pie Casserole with seasoned ground beef, savory vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (prepared ahead)
  • 2 tbsp butter, cut into small pats
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, sautéing until soft and aromatic.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and mixed vegetables. Simmer for about 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Transfer the filling to a casserole dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Scoop the prepared mashed potatoes on top, smoothing them out, and dot with butter and cheese if desired.
  7. Bake for 20–30 minutes until the top is golden and filling is bubbling.
  8. Allow to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use homemade mashed potatoes for the best texture; store-bought works in a pinch. Consider fresh herbs for added flavor.
