Description

A comforting and budget-friendly German bread that is easy to make, perfect for sandwiches or toast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (240250 g)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 105–115°F / 40–46°C)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Warm the water to about 105–115°F and pour it into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the surface and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and oil to the yeast mixture. Mix with a spoon or dough scraper until a shaggy dough forms and no large dry patches remain.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for about 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and slightly elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it seam-side down in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover loosely and let it rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Bake the loaf for 25–30 minutes until golden brown. If the crust browns too quickly, tent with foil.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For a richer loaf, swap the vegetable oil for 1 tablespoon melted butter and 2 tablespoons milk. Store at room temperature for up to 2–3 days.
