Description
A comforting and versatile Italian dish made with layers of ground meat, rich cheeses, and tomato sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 16 oz full-fat ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 9 lasagna noodles (uncooked)
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent. Mix in garlic and sauté for another 30-45 seconds.
- Add ground beef and pork to the pan, browning thoroughly. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, a dash of dried basil, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Boil salted water to cook lasagna noodles until al dente. Drain well.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, layer meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and shredded mozzarella. Repeat until you run out of ingredients, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until bubbly and golden. Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Let the lasagna sit for a few minutes after baking to help the layers set. Fresh herbs and high-quality cheese can enhance the dish’s flavor.
