Description

A comforting and versatile Italian dish made with layers of ground meat, rich cheeses, and tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 16 oz full-fat ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 9 lasagna noodles (uncooked)
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent. Mix in garlic and sauté for another 30-45 seconds.
  2. Add ground beef and pork to the pan, browning thoroughly. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, a dash of dried basil, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  5. Boil salted water to cook lasagna noodles until al dente. Drain well.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, layer meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and shredded mozzarella. Repeat until you run out of ingredients, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until bubbly and golden. Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Let the lasagna sit for a few minutes after baking to help the layers set. Fresh herbs and high-quality cheese can enhance the dish’s flavor.
