Description

This quick, no-yeast homemade bread is ready in about 20 minutes and features a golden crust and a soft interior, making it perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or unsweetened plant milk)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • Optional mix-ins: 1–2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs, 1/2–1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, parmesan, or pecorino), 1–2 cloves roasted garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well blended.
  3. Pour in milk and vegetable oil; stir until shaggy dough forms.
  4. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Score the top if desired.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, rotating halfway through, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  7. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For a lighter crumb, sift the flour. For dairy-free, use unsweetened plant milk and olive oil. Store in a paper bag at room temperature for up to 2 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.
