Description
A delightful baked French toast casserole made with rich custard-soaked challah or brioche, perfect for brunch or gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf challah or brioche bread
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the streusel)
Instructions
- Cut the bread: Begin by cutting the challah or brioche into cubes and placing them into a greased baking dish.
- Make the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Soak the bread: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, gently pressing them down to ensure everything is well-soaked.
- Prepare the streusel: In another bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and ground cinnamon, mixing until crumbly.
- Top it off: Spread the streusel topping over the bread mixture.
- Refrigerate: Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or, for the best results, overnight.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 1 hour, or until it’s golden brown and set in the middle.
- Cool and serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving to enjoy the full creaminess.
