Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • Frosting (buttercream or cream cheese)


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour six 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, and then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix this dry mixture into the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, until fully incorporated.
  5. Divide the batter into six bowls, adding a different food coloring to each.
  6. Pour each colored batter into the prepared pans, ensuring even distribution.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick, which should come out clean.
  8. Once baked, let the layers cool completely before frosting.
  9. Layer the cakes by spreading frosting between each layer, and coat the top and sides of the cake thoroughly.
  10. Finally, decorate to your heart’s content!

Store cake layers wrapped in plastic wrap or an airtight container; refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
